Packers sell 64,000 tickets to watch Brett Favre induction on video boards

Nothing in the NFL compares to Green Bay. It's the most unusual place in professional sports, in a good way.

The Packers are a way of life there, and there's no other NFL city (it's a stretch to call Green Bay a city, but whatever) in which this headline would happen: In about six hours, the Packers sold 64,000 tickets to watch Brett Favre's team Hall of Fame induction ... on the stadium video boards.

Yep.

The Packers announced that they would have an additional viewing opportunity for Favre's induction into the Packers Hall of Fame, which will be held in the Lambeau Field atrium for about 1,600 people. Even though the ceremony will be broadcast by the television partners around the state, on NFL Network and streamed over Packers.com, the team offered the opportunity to watch it on the video boards from the Lambeau Field stands.

The Packers put the in-stadium tickets for the July 18 event on sale at 10 a.m. Central on Tuesday. They charged $4 each, with proceeds going to Favre 4 Hope. The team announced at about 4 p.m. that 64,000 tickets had been sold, leaving only a few remaining. To put the 64,000 figure in some perspective, the population of Green Bay is roughly 105,000. Crazy.

Favre will also make an appearance in the Lambeau Field bowl to address the fans that night. That should be quite a moment. There's a ton of history between the Packers and Favre. Most of it is great. It didn't end very well. But it appears most fans in Wisconsin are ready again to just remember the good times with Favre, which included three MVPs and a Super Bowl XXXI win. Favre will also have his number retired that night, with a separate ceremony to reveal the number in Lambeau Field on Thanksgiving, which has been a long time coming given the friction between the team and one of its legends.

I'm not sure another team could sell out its stadium to watch a broadcast of a player's induction to the team's Hall of Fame. And if you think that makes Green Bay unique, trust me on this: The tailgating for the event will be just as intense as it is on game day.
