Johnny Manziel reportedly throws big Friday party, leading to more trouble

The Cleveland Browns should have been building around two 2014 first-round picks and 2013 All-Pro receiver Josh Gordon in an effort to climb back to NFL relevancy.

Let's just say it has not been a good week for the Browns.

Reports from CBSSports.com and the Cleveland Plain Dealer said Johnny Manziel, the 22nd pick of this year's draft, threw a big party on Friday night. That's when the trouble started.

Gordon was suspended for missing a walk-through practice on Saturday, a bad sign for a player with a lot of off-field issues. He was at Manziel's party, as were other Browns players, according to the Plain Dealer. Gordon will miss 11 of 16 games this season due to suspensions.

Manziel, who was put on injured reserve this past week, didn't show for a treatment session for his injured hamstring Saturday morning. When he didn't show and wasn't answering his phone, team security was dispatched for find him, the Plain Dealer said. Manziel said early this week that he understands he needs to put in more work this offseason to prove he can be the team's franchise quarterback, and that he realized he needed to be more professional. By the weekend he was grabbing headlines for the same things that have put him in a precarious position with the organization in the first place.

Oh, and the issues didn't end there.

Rookie cornerback Justin Gilbert, the eighth overall pick who has drawn the ire of his teammates for having a bad season on and off the field, was deactivated for Sunday's game because he was late to a team meeting. ESPN first reported that Gilbert was late to the meeting. The Plain Dealer said Gilbert has frequently been late for meetings and "displayed one of the worst attitudes some in the organization have ever seen."

Wonderful times in Cleveland, which lost its season finale to the Baltimore Ravens, 20-10, on Sunday.

So there you have it, three young stars who spent the past couple days getting suspended, fined or deactivated. The Browns turned two first-round picks into players whose rookie years were awful, and they might need to trade Gordon this offseason after so many issues. The Browns have not won a playoff game since re-entering the NFL in 1999, and the actions of some of their young players make you wonder how close they are to breaking that streak.
