Five days after ‘Black Monday,’ Tennessee Titans get around to firing Mike Munchak

Most teams fire coaches the day after the NFL regular season ends for a pretty simple reason: Other teams are doing the same, and they don't want to waste any time and miss out on the best candidates in their search.

The Tennessee Titans apparently don't believe in that theory.

The Titans fired Mike Munchak on Saturday, according to numerous reports. That's not too surprising, given that Munchak was 22-26 in three seasons, and coming off two losing seasons in a row. Tennessee went 7-9 this season. But the timing is peculiar.

Five teams fired coaches on 'Black Monday.' One, the Houston Texans, fired Gary Kubiak during the season. Not surprisingly, the Texans hired Penn State's Bill O'Brien already. They had a head start on the rest of the league. The Buccaneers have hired Lovie Smith to be their head coach. The other four teams with an opening have spent the week interviewing the best candidates, or at very least reaching out to them.

All of that happened while the Titans couldn't make up their minds.

Even as of yesterday, there were reports that after Munchak met with team president and CEO Tommy Smith it appeared he would be retained if he made some changes. Less than 24 hours later he was fired.

It's not like the Titans didn't know Munchak well; he spent the last three decades with the organization as a player or coach. There were reports during the season the team was considering a massive overhaul, so it's not something the organization hadn't pondered or knew was coming. The results on the field didn't change since the regular season ended last Sunday. All the Titans did was waste time and lose ground in the race to hire a new coach.

Munchak is gone and the Titans can start over. They're just starting the race about a week after everyone else took off.
