Fan stabbed near Candlestick Park, two suspects arrested

A man from Elk Grove, Calif., was stabbed as he was walking to Candlestick Park to watch Sunday's game between the San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants. The 27-year-old man was walking to the stadium with five friends when he was stopped by two men at the southwest side of the stadium -- also, reportedly football fans -- and he was stabbed in the torso after a verbal altercation. According to reports, the man is expected to survive.

San Francisco Police Sgt. Michael Andraychak told local media that two men are in custody for the crime. The suspects were described as a 22-year-old male from Daly City and a 30-year-old man from San Francisco.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time recently that violence has broken out in Bay Area football stadiums -- specifically, Candlestick Park. In August of 2011, two people were shot and another beaten during a preseason game between the 49ers and the Oakland Raiders. The incidents caused both teams to agree to end their traditional preseason rivalry.

And it's not the first time this year we've seen violence specific to football games. Just last week, 42-year-old William "Christopher" Pettry of Chicago was stabbed to death in a Jacksonville, Fla., bar just hours before the Chicago Bears-Jacksonville Jaguars game. The Bears have moved to raise funds for Pettry's family.
