Eagles head coach Andy Reid will continue to ‘evaluate’ the quarterback position
Three weeks into the 2012 season, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick is completing just over 55 percent of his 125 pass attempts, has twice as many interceptions (six) as touchdowns (three) and his quarterback rating of 66.2 ranks 29th in the NFL right now. Vick has been sacked nine times for minus-60 yards with three lost fumbles adding to his turnover total and offsetting the 94 yards and one touchdown he has on the ground.
Coming off a 27-6 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, who sacked Vick five times and hit the oft-injured quarterback a total of 13 times, according to the official stat sheet, Eagles head coach Andy Reid was asked if he was considering making a change at the position.
"Right now, we're with Michael and that's what we're doing," Reid said [according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer]. "We'll evaluate it as we go."
If the Eagles were to make a change, third-round pick Nick Foles would surely be the guy. Selected with the No. 88 pick in the 2012 NFL draft, Foles had a solid preseason, completing 40-of-63 pass attempts for 553 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions. Foles' performance established him as the No. 2 behind Vick, moving ahead of veteran Trent Edwards and pushing Mike Kafka clear off the 53-man roster.
With a 2-1 record, and likely needing to make the playoffs to save Reid's job, it's probably far too early in the season for the Eagles to seriously consider a change at the position. But Reid is correct in that the evaluation process is ongoing as 2012 has always been a critical season in the relationship between the Eagles and Michael Vick.
Signed to what was essentially a five-year, $80 million contract that contained $35.5 million in guarantees, Vick earned $20 million last season and is earning a fully guaranteed base salary of $12.5 million this season. Next season, Vick's salary is scheduled to increase to $15.5 million, of which $3 million is guaranteed for "injury only." If Vick is on the Eagles' roster two days into the 2013 waiver period — two days after Super Bowl XLVII — the $3 million will become fully guaranteed. If Vick continues to turn the ball over at this rate, and the Eagles end up missing the playoffs, it would not be a surprise if they release Vick after the Super Bowl and roll with Foles at the quarterback position.
