Braylon Edwards re-signs with Jets, reunites with decision-makers he called ‘idiots’

Who says you can't go home again? Receiver Braylon Edwards, who played with the New York Jets in 2009 and 2010, has been claimed through waivers by that team after the Seattle Seahawks gave him a waived/injured designation and the Jets' Stephen Hill was injured. It was a seemingly obvious move, but for the small fact that Edwards recently referred to the same people who just gave him a new chance as "idiots." This from Edwards' Twitter account on Dec. 4, as the Jets' faithful were bashing the bejeezus out of quarterback Mark Sanchez:

Indeed, and if you understand the psychology of the Jets team, this works on two levels. Rex Ryan has no problems with players who speak their minds, and Ryan probably admired Edwards for sticking up for Sanchez. And in his heart of hearts, Ryan might know that the people making the decisions for the Jets this year haven't been as impressive as anticipated. Not to mention the fact that the Jets seem to welcome circuses, especially when those circuses land on all the morning yap-yap shows.

Of course, Edwards hasn't always been Sanchez's biggest public supporter. When I asked him in August to compare Sanchez to Seattle's Russell Wilson, he was firmly on the side of the Seattle star.

"I see better things," he said. "It's like I said after the Chiefs game -- it's his approach. It's very veteran-like. He studies film; he breaks it down. He doesn't approach it like a rookie, and he's not looking for excuses. He's very impressive."

As for Edwards, he'll certainly be asked to contribute immediately to an offense in desperate need of targets for Sanchez, Tebow, Greg McElroy, or whoever else the Jets decide to throw out there at the quarterback position at any point in time. Edwards hasn't been very productive through a 2011 season with the San Francisco 49ers that was ended by injury, and a 2012 season with the Seahawks in which he was little more than an occasional red-zone target.

But based on what I saw of him in Seattle's practices and games, he's got enough left in the tank to provide a little help for an offense that really needs it. The Jets currently rank 29th in Football Outsiders' efficiency metrics in passing offense, and Sanchez is the fifth-worst quarterback in FO's DVOA per-play stats -- only Blaine Gabbert, Matt Cassel, and two alleged quarterbacks for the Arizona Cardinals have been worse this year.

The 29-year-old Edwards played in 28 games for the Jets in 2009-2010. He caught 88 passes for 1,445 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was acquired from the Cleveland Browns, who selected him third overall in the 2005 NFL draft. For the Seahawks this year, he played in 10 games with one start. He caught eight passes for 74 yards and a touchdown.
