Brandon Jacobs says he’s ‘rotting away’ on the 49ers

Brandon Jacobs' first season with the San Francisco 49ers will likely be his last as the the veteran running back took to social media to express his frustration with his playing time this season.

"I am on this team rotting away so why would I wanna put any pics up of anything that say niners." Jacobs wrote on Instagram, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com. "This is by far the worst year I ever had, I'll tell you like I told plenty others."

Released by the New York Giants for salary cap purposes in March, Jacobs lingered on the free-agent market until agreeing to terms with the 49ers on March 28. The one-year, $1.6 million contract, with $400,000 in incentives, was signed on April 7, with Jacobs receiving a $150,000 signing bonus. Jacobs received a $300,000 bonus for being on the roster in Week 1 and is earning a $950,000 base salary. Jacobs also receives an additional $12,500 for each game he's on the team's 46-man game day roster, but thus far, he has earned only three of those "per game active" roster bonuses.

After missing a month of the season with a knee injury, Jacobs finally dressed, but did not play, in a Thursday win over the Seattle Seahawks on Oct. 18. Jacobs was inactive the next three games before dressing, and playing, in each of the last two. In 10 offensive snaps this season, Jacobs has five carries for 7 yards. The 49ers are expected to dress second-round running back LaMichael James on Sunday, which could mean Jacobs spends another Sunday modeling Nike and New Era gear.

"I don't understand why people are angry at me because I wanna do what I am paid to do," Jacobs wrote on Twitter. "I am a competitive person, I think people should be mad if I didn't wanna play, but I forgot the people that's pissed they don't have a athletic bone and their body. As for all of my Instagram photos I don't have any niner pics, if you'll find me some pics I'll put them up."

NFL careers are short, and they're even shorter for running backs, particularly those who weigh over 260 pounds. It's possible that Jacobs, who has a history of bemoaning his workload or lack thereof, could be trying to grease his way out of San Francisco. A late season release would not be unprecedented as the 49ers abruptly waived wide receiver Braylon Edwards late in the 2011 regular season. But with potential NFC playoff opponents in need of a running back — the Giants could be interested after placing Andre Brown on injured reserve — and the 49ers' lack of depth at receiver following Edwards' release haunting them in last season's playoffs, we expect Jacobs to remain on the 49ers' roster until his contract expires.
