Aqib Talib accused of threatening to ‘put a cap in’ a woman over a traffic dispute

Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib will stand trial later in March on felony charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Assuming he's not washing trays in a prison cafeteria somewhere, he will be back with the Bucs, as head coach Greg Schiano has vowed to give him a clean slate.

Still, he doesn't need this latest run-in with the legal system.

Talib is being sued for $15,000 for allegedly threatening to "put a cap in" a woman in the midst of a 2010 traffic dispute. If you aren't familiar with the lingo, to "put a cap in" someone means to shoot them with a gun. Most legal systems in the United States frown on putting a cap in someone as a way of handling traffic disputes.

The plaintiff, Betty Atwood, said she was driving eastbound on Spruce Street near the intersection of Westshore Boulevard on Dec. 9, 2010 when Talib "negligently caused them to collide," according to the suit, filed March 2 in with the Civil Division of Hillsborough County's 13th Circuit Court.

Atwood says in the suit that before police arrived Talib threatened her. She is suing him for $15,000, saying she suffered physical injuries from the crash as well as depression, anxiety, and "severe emotional distress" from Talib's threat.

One could understand a person having a little anxiety about such a threat from Talib, given other behavior of which he's accused. Why we're just now getting to a lawsuit from an incident that happened in 2010, I don't know. Why the woman is only shooting for $15,000, I also don't know.

Since it is from 2010, though, I'd assume it would also fall under the "clean slate" Schiano promised to Talib. Win or lose on this one, let's hope Talib's days of bad behavior are behind him.
