Steve Spurrier to receive award from former rival's supporter group

Former Florida and South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is getting an award from a group of Tennessee supporters. Really.

The Knoxville Quarterback Club will present Spurrier with the Neyland Trophy in April. As the Knoxville News-Sentinel points out, Spurrier beat Tennessee at Neyland Stadium while coaching Duke, Florida and South Carolina.

The Vols have been a frequent target of Spurrier's verbal jabs. His most famous Tennessee quote may be "You can't spell Citrus without U-T." Tennessee never made it to the Sugar Bowl while Spurrier was at Florida.

Spurrier also joked that when Peyton Manning returned for his senior year that "I know why Peyton came back for his senior year. He wanted to be a three-time star of the Citrus Bowl." The Volunteers had gone to the Citrus Bowl in Manning's sophomore and junior seasons.

Spurrier is set to receive the award at a dinner Friday, April 15 and will be honored at Tennessee's Orange and White game on April 16. Previous coaches to receive the award have been Tom Osborne (not long after his Nebraska team beat Tennessee in Manning's final game), Lou Holtz and Bear Bryant, the only coach with more SEC victories than Spurrier.

The Knoxville QB Club will also give Brent Musburger the Lindsey Nelson Broadcasting Award. How would you like to be a fly on the wall for all of Spurrier and Musburger's conversations that weekend?
