Stanford grad Carly Fiorina is rooting for Iowa in Rose Bowl

Politics are the worst.

Stanford graduate and current Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina tweeted Friday afternoon that she would not be supporting the Cardinal in the Rose Bowl.

The reason is pretty transparent. The Iowa caucuses on Feb. 1. Apparently Fiorina thinks she has a better chance of getting votes in the state if she turns her back on her alma mater. Political pandering never stops even though Fiorina got her Bachelor's degree from Iowa's opponent.

Stupid sports tweets from politicians are becoming all-too-common. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott congratulated the Houston Astros for an American League Division Series win before the Kansas City Royals came back to beat the Astros not only in Game 4 but in the series.

This is a different level of dumb. Not only is Fiorina looking like a terrible sports fan, she's employing a strategy that's far from foolproof. How many people from Iowa are dumb enough to vote for her because she's rooting against her school in the Rose Bowl? The odds of it backfiring and people recognizing how insipid her tweet really is are much higher. One of the greatest traits a sports fan can have is loyalty. It's clear Fiorina doesn't (publicly) have any.

Or maybe the tweet was made for attention. Fiorina certainly got some with it. And given the current circus that is the 2016 Republican primary, publicity of any kind seems to be many candidates' goal.
