SEC fines Auburn, Missouri and Ole Miss after field stormings following wins
If you storm the field following your favorite SEC team's win, you're getting your school fined.
Though we can imagine that Missouri and Auburn are OK with it. Ole Miss? Maybe not so much.
The SEC announced Friday that it was fining the three schools after its fans had rushed the field following wins. Auburn and Missouri were fined $5,000 each while Ole Miss, as a repeat offender, was fined $25,000. The Rebels were fined after a field-rushing in 2012.
Storming the field is a violation of the conference's "Field Access Policy."
“These were some of the most exciting and intriguing games of the college football season and we understand the exuberance of our fans in the celebration of their schools’ victories, but these incidents pose a significant risk of injury and we must always make the health and safety of our student-athletes and fans the top priority,” SEC commissioner Mike Slive said in the conference's release.
Uh, yes, to the first part of your first sentence, Mike. Especially in Auburn's case. Its fine is for when the field was flooded with fans after Chris Davis' 109-yard field goal return beat Alabama 34-28. Missouri was fined after its fans rushed the field later that evening when the Tigers booked a trip to play Auburn in the SEC Championship game after beating Texas A&M 28-21.
Ole Miss was fined for the aftermath of its 27-24 win over LSU.
Mississippi State was also fined $25,000 for its cowbell usage which violates the SEC's artificial noise prohibition. The Starkville tradition first brought a fine in 2010, hence the sum equal to the fine levied towards Ole Miss.
