Penn State OL coach Herb Hand gives us insight into his world via a Reddit Q&A

Penn State offensive line coach Herb Hand has got to be one of the most entertaining and engaging coaches on social media.

On Saturday, he took his social medializing to another level by engaging in a Q&A session on Reddit, and no question was out of bounds.

Not sure how many questions Hand actually answered, but we’ve taken the time to compile some of our favorites.

Q: Coach, you have had to scheme for some great defensive players over the years, including Jamal Reynolds at Florida State, Gerald McCoy at Oklahoma, Julius Peppers/Ryan Sims at North Carolina, and Clowney at South Carolina.

Of all the players you've schemed for, which was the most impressive to see in person?

HH: Clowney http://therubberchickens.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/tumblr_mggwbvlmoi1s368llo1_1280.jpg

Q: Coach! You often tweet about your smokin' hot wife so I was wondering.. Do you have any tips for younger guys out there trying to find a quality woman like THE Deb Hand? Thanks! We are!

HH: Be a good dude. Don't be a jackass...I have been both and being a good guy works better.

Q: Other than Nashville, which SEC college town has the best food?

HH: I was going to say something like "The Gator bites in Gainesville were delicious last year" but that might get me in trouble. So I guess I'll just say Auburn because I'm pretty sure my good buddy Gus Malzahn was fired up when they got a PF Chang's there or something like that.

Q: Why do you think there aren't more coaches who have such a great Twitter presence like you do? What advantages do you think it gives you as a coach or recruiter? How do your players feel about your involvement on the site?

HH: I think more guys are embracing social media in general because they recognize the power it has and that if they don't they are putting themselves at a competitive disadvantage...as to your last question, they bust my chops about it a little but I think they enjoy my Twitter OG-ness...especially when I drop a vine of them destroying their opponent.

Q: What kind of hair style did you rock back in your younger years? Pictures or it didn't happen.

HH: http://twicsy.com/i/5gS3ed Here ya go - Senior in college – SMOOOOTH

Q: 1.) What do you miss most from Nashville that you can't get in State College? 2.) Would you rather fight 100 duck sized Clowneys or 1 Clowney sized Duck?

HH: 1) My wife and kids currently 2) I would take the Clowney sized duck and employ the indefensible fight move as demonstrated at the :23 second mark of this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vz6ws0wAgi0

Q: In your experience, what have you found as the best way for a coach to get the most of his players?

HH: Relationships - No player cares how much you know til they know how much you care about them...I believe this coaching axiom and try to live it everyday.

Q: What was the 'ah-ha' moment when you realized, "I am a part of Penn State now." That moment when you feel engranded in the culture and welcomed... or do you believe that moment has still yet to come?

HH: Thats an interesting question...I'm not sure if that has happened yet, I can tell you that I have spent a good amount of time walking the halls of Lasch and just looking at the tradition on the walls, the faces and events and history and I have to remind myself to breathe because its so exciting to think that I am now a part of this program.

Q: If you had one shot to impress /r/CFB with a meal, what would you cook?

HH: I've cooked a meal for a recruit before it was - Bacon, Bleu Cheese and Grape flatbread drizzled with honey - Wedge Salad (simple but delicious) - Crab stuffed filet mignon seared in bacon fat - grilled squash medley - sautéed asparagus - parmesan pasta - pecan crusted vanilla ice cream ball over a fudge brownie with salted caramel sauce for desert - CLOSED THE DEAL

You can read coach Hand’s entire Reddit AMA here.

He gives a lot of insights about coaching, the business and player evaluation and development. It was really an interesting Q&A. Here’s hoping he does it again.
