One of the first jerseys in college football history goes up for auction

One of the oldest college football jerseys in existence is now up for auction and you can take it home for the low, low price of $75,000.

Heritage Auctions is auctioning off an 1895 game-worn Princeton jersey, which features the original Spalding tag. There are several spots on the jersey where holes have been sewn up presumably from game wear and tear (check out the corner of the P and a couple places on the sleeves).

The first-ever football game was between Rutgers College and the College of New Jersey, which is now Princeton, on Nov. 6, 1869. Rutgers won 6-4. The account of the game is worth a read just for the verbiage. Princeton actually won 22 of the 40 first national titles.

Currently, the jersey is going for $18,500, but there are 17 days remaining on the auction and the site is hoping to fetch $75,000 for the item.

I have to admit this is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. If I had a spare $75,000, this would be in my office. We see jersey's autographed by famous players all the time, but it's rare to see one of the first jerseys in the history of the game. That's pretty amazing and an item any football connoisseur should want.
