Notre Dame CB KeiVarae Russell has broken tibia

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said Sunday that cornerback KeiVarae Russell would miss six to eight weeks after suffering a broken right tibia against Boston College.

And when talking about Russell's injury, Kelly had his sights set on a certain College Football Playoff game.

"Certainly very disappointing," Kelly said via BlueandGoldIllustrated.com. "He was in a lot of pain last night on the way home. But he's just one of those kids that you hate to lose. He's given so much to the program...I think it'd have to be closer to the national championship game [to get him back] than earlier. That's a pretty hard number, the 6-8 [weeks], because of the bone growth situation there. We're obviously going to do whatever we can, but I think it's more towards the national championship game getting him back than a playoff game."

Kelly said Russell was in a cast after the game and will have a rod inserted into his leg. Russell has 60 tackles and 3.5 tackles for a loss. He's Notre Dame's second-leading tackler. The Irish are currently No. 4 in the College Football Playoff rankings.

Kelly also said that C.J. Prosise was considered doubtful for Notre Dame's game against Stanford . Prosise also left Notre Dame's win over Boston College on Saturday night with an ankle injury. He has no ligament damage in the ankle, however.
