Mississippi jewelry store offers refunds for Southern Miss upset of MSU

A jewelry store in Petal, Miss., will refund any purchase made during the month of August if Southern Miss upsets Mississippi State in the season opener on Sept. 5.

Patrons also get to keep the merchandise.

Carter’s Jewelry wrote on its Instagram page that it took out an expensive insurance policy to cover the promotion. However, this seems like this is a pretty safe bet for the store.

Southern Miss and Mississippi State played in the season opener last year with the Bulldogs cruising to a 49-0 win. Even though Southern Miss owns a 14-13-1 advantage in the series, Mississippi State has won the last three meetings. The Bulldogs’ last loss to the Golden Eagles came in 1988.

Southern Miss has won a total of four games in the past three seasons.

We’ve seen these kinds of promotional stunts in the past, and last year, two furniture stores ended up refunding its patrons millions of dollars.

Last preseason, a furniture store in College Station offered refunds if Texas A&M upset South Carolina by more than 10 points. The Aggies stunned the Gamecocks 52-28 and the store owed its customers more than $1 million. Similarly, a furniture store in Columbus, Ohio offered rebates on purchases of more than $1,999 if Ohio State defeated Oregon by more than seven points in the national championship. Of course, the Buckeyes won 42-20 and the furniture store paid out more than $1.5 million in refunds.
