A Mt. San Antonio College football player was gunned down in a drive-by early Sunday morning while he was coming home from a church event.

William Fifita, 20, was driving in Los Angeles around 2 a.m. when he pulled into the left turn lane at the corner of Rosecrans Avenue at Crenshaw Boulevard. A sedan pulled alongside Fifita’s vehicle and fired what witness claim were as many as 10 shots into the car before speeding away.

Fifita was pronounced dead at the scene. Two male passengers in the vehicle were injured while a female passenger was uninjured. The entire scene was captured on surveillance cameras.

"This is a senseless murder...you've got folks coming back from a church function. We don't know the exact number of suspects or a description at this point," Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Lt. Steve Jauch said.

Fifita was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was returning from a dance for young Latter-day Saints members before the shooting, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Fifita had just returned from a two-year church mission in Guatemala and had joined the Mt. San Antonio College football team. The school did not issue a statement about the shooting, but did confirm Fifita was a member of the football program despite not being listed on the rosters available on its website.

The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for the funeral expenses.
