Former Notre Dame OL Matt Hegarty transferring to Oregon

Oregon got some reinforcement for its offensive line with the addition of Notre Dame OL Matt Hegarty.

Oregon's football staff announced Hegarty's arrival via its Twitter account Tuesday afternoon.

Hegarty said he was transferring from Notre Dame in March. He's a graduate transfer and is eligible to play immediately. He was a starter on Notre Dame's offensive line for 11 of the Irish's 13 games in 2014 at center and guard. Given the picture in the tweet, it looks like he'll be keeping his No. 77, though the number is currently worn by Haniteli Lousi per Oregon's roster.

He missed part of the 2012 season after he had what was termed a "mini-stroke" in November 2012. He subsequently had heart surgery to repair two small holes in his heart that had been there since birth. He was able to return in time for spring practice before the 2013 season.

Hegarty will likely step in and compete for a starting job at Oregon. The Ducks return both starting tackles in Tyler Johnstone and Tyrell Cosby and right guard Cameron Hunt. Hegarty could compete with Doug Brenner at center and Jake Pisarcik at left guard. Hroniss Grassu, considered one of the best centers in the country in 2014, was a third round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Hegarty was a four-star recruit in the class of 2011 and redshirted in his first year at Notre Dame.
