Florida State wide receiver Isaiah Jones declared academically ineligible

One of the more promising young Florida State receivers won’t play in 2014.

Head coach Jimbo Fisher announced Saturday that sophomore Isaiah Jones has been declared academically ineligible for the season, but he will remain in school and practice with the team.

“Isaiah will be (in school) but won’t be able to play, like Mario (Pender) a year ago,” Fisher said, per the Orlando Sentinel.

The 6-foot-4, 198-pound Jones, a four-star recruit in the class of 2013, caught only two passes for 31 yards in five games for the national champion Seminoles in 2013, but showed plenty of potential in the spring game when he caught five passes for 81 yards to lead his team.

Jones was one of several underclassmen receivers expected to help fill the void left by the graduated Kenny Shaw and Kelvin Benjamin, a first round NFL draft pick who left school early. In Jones’ absence, young players like Levonte Whitfield (a guy Auburn fans might remember) and Ja’Vonn Harrison will be looking to crack the rotation along with five-star true freshmen Travis Rudolph and Ermon Lane.

Of course, quarterback Jameis Winston’s top target, senior Rashad Greene (76 catches, 1,128 yards, 9 TDs in 2013), will continue to be relied upon. Redshirt seniors Christian Green and Jarred Haggins also figure to be in the mix.

Sophomore Jesus Wilson was listed atop the depth chart opposite Greene during the spring, but he was indefinitely suspended after allegedly stealing a scooter on campus in June. Fisher said Saturday that there has been no change in Wilson’s status at this time. Wilson pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges in July.

The Seminoles’ season opens up against Oklahoma State on August 30 in Arlington, Texas.
