Charlie Strong: Texas is 'going to steamroll everyone'
Texas head coach Charlie Strong is quite confident that year three of his tenure will be a lot better than his first two seasons, and he’s apparently making that known across campus.
According to the Austin-American Statesman, Strong, during a talk with UT’s faculty council, said the Longhorns “are going to steamroll everyone” once their rebuilding process turns the corner. How’s that for confidence?
Here’s the context of his boast, via the Statesman:
Strong then went into his usual breakdown of the roster. On the quarterback situation, he ranked the contenders as such: Tyrone Swoopes, Jerrod Heard, Shane Buechele and Kai Locksley. He wants someone to be a clear-cut winner going into the summer.
But Strong, who spoke with a tad more oomph than he normally does with reporters, is clearly excited about the recent recruiting class — ranked 11th nationally by 247Sports’ composite ratings — and what it may signal going forward. In his mind, back-to-back losing seasons are a thing of the past.
“What’s going to happen when we flip this thing? Where are we going to be then?,” he told the crowd of about a hundred faculty members. “You think about what we’re doing right now, what’s going to happen when we really get it turned?
“They might as well move out of the way, because we are going to steamroll everyone,” he added. “That’s going to happen.”
That has to get Texas fans juiced up.

The Longhorns resumed spring practice this week after some time off for spring break. And though the regular season opener, again against Notre Dame, isn’t for another six months or so, Strong is chomping at the bit. Beyond that, he wants to get rid of the bad taste from last year’s debacle in South Bend, a 38-3 loss.
“I love that we open with Notre Dame. I really do love that,” Strong said. “We were embarrassed up there last year. I tell our players all the time, what bothers me more than anything, when we get the support that we get, we go out and don’t play up to our ability. That’s what bothers me.
“We have so much support,” he added, “and there’s so many people who have so much passion for Texas football. There’s no reason for us to go let them down.”
That support Strong, who has an 11-14 record in two seasons with the program, speaks of wasn’t always there, but a season-ending win over Baylor and an outstanding 2016 recruiting class has things trending toward optimistic in Austin.

Strong’s sentiments were a bit surprising to one Big 12 coach. When informed of the comments Wednesday, Texas Tech’s Kliff Kingsbury asked if it was April Fools Day.
“He said that? It’s not April Fools yet, is it? No? He just cut it loose?” Kingsbury asked reporters. “I did not see that, but I would not make those statements. To each his own.”
