Bobby Bowden says Jameis Winston does things 'kids in grammar school would do'
Add Bobby Bowden to the list of notable people who believe Jameis Winston needs to grow up.
The former Florida State coach said Winston does things kids younger than him would do and that he needs to draw a line for himself to not do immature things any longer.
"He's got to grow up. He's got to grow up," Bowden told ESPN. "He does things that kids in grammar school would do, or kids in junior high would do, you know it. And I think once he draws the line and says I'm not going to step below this another time – and I think he can do that – but if he don't he's going to make it mighty tough on himself. I think his draft status has already dropped way down, but you know what's amazing to me about him? I don't care what goes on off the field, once he gets under the center he blocks everything else out."
Almost impossibly, scrutiny on Winston has increased over the past month. He was suspended for Florida State's game against Clemson for saying an obscene phrase in the student union, the school has looked into reportedly over 2,000 of his autographs on an authentication website, and Florida State has proceeded with a disciplinary hearing against Winston regarding sexual assault allegations last year. Winston's lawyer, David Cornwell, told ESPN that he's cooperated with the school and has already contacted FSU's Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
Last Friday, Winston was notified of an informational hearing to precede a code of conduct hearing where he might be charged with violations of Florida State's code of conduct. He had five school days to respond and schedule the informational hearing.
A former Florida Supreme Court justice will hear Winston's case, and both Winston and the accuser had the right to strike one of the three possible candidates from consideration before the hearing is held and a judge is selected.
Winston is expected to play for Florida State against Notre Dame on Saturday. Earlier in the week, former Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson, who grew up in the same hometown as Winston, said that he gave the 2013 Heisman winner advice before he was cited for shoplifting crab legs and crawfish. He hasn't talked to Winston since.
Bowden is officially recognized as the winningest coach in FBS football history with 377 wins.
