Michael Dyer's career with Arkansas State is over before it even began.

Coach Gus Malzahn issued a statement Sunday evening saying Dyer, who transferred from Auburn in January, had been dismissed from the program after violating team rules.

"I am truly disappointed that it didn't work out here at ASU for Mike," Malzahn said. "I wish Mike nothing but the best in the future."

Malzahn knew what he was getting into when he recruited Dyer to follow him from Auburn to Arkansas State. Dyer's relationship with Auburn coach Gene Chizik started to sour toward the end of the season after Dyer was suspended for the Chick-Fil-A Bowl after a violation of team rules. Later, Dyer was involved in a robbery trial where the gun used was traced back to him. Dyer had no involvement in the robbery and faced no charges.

Still, Malzahn believed in Dyer and was more than willing to give him a second chance.

"I am fully aware of Mike's circumstances," Malzahn said in a statement during the trial. "He knows very well the high standard we have of all our players here at Arkansas State, and I'm confident that he will meet those expectations."

The details of Dyer's dismissal are not known and it's unclear what he'll do next. Earlier this month, the NCAA had denied Dyer's request for immediate eligibility and he had to sit out the 2012 season per NCAA transfer rules.

Depending on the circumstances that led to his dismissal, Dyer, a sophomore, could transfer to an FCS school and play immediately -- he was linked with D-II Pittsburg State -- or he could spend the year training and hope for a shot in the NFL. However, if he goes the NFL route, his maturity and character will no doubt come into question by NFL scouts.

There's no doubt about Dyer's skill on the field. He rushed for 2,335 yards in just two seasons, but if Dyer's smart (insert jokes here), he'll use the next year to repair his image with a lower-level team and head into his potential pro career as a reformed player and man.
