4-star RB picks Florida in video, goes with Syracuse minutes later

If recruiting is one thing, it’s unpredictable.

Robert Washington, a four-star class of 2016 running back from North Carolina, announced his verbal commitment to Syracuse on Saturday during a ceremony at his school. However, about 15 minutes earlier, Bleacher Report published a video with Washington in which he described his commitment to Florida.

So what happened? Washington told Syracuse.com that he simply changed his mind.

“I did the report on Thursday,” Washington said. “I had my mind set for the report, but I changed my mind the next day to Syracuse.”

From Syracuse.com:

Washington said nothing changed with Florida or Syracuse in the two days leading up to his scheduled announcement. He just thought about the choice more, discussed his options with family and friends and made the change of heart on his way down from Connecticut, where he was visiting his mother, Komica Coote.

Washington is ranked as the 15th-best running back in the 2016 class by Rivals. He had offers from dozens of schools across the country, but ultimately chose the Orange over finalists Alabama, Florida, Michigan, TCU and North Carolina. He told Rivals that Syracuse has been recruiting him hard since he was in the ninth grade.

“Syracuse really stuck by me,” Washington said. “Coach (Eric) White and everybody have been recruiting me since my ninth grade year. They’ve seen me develop and get bigger, stronger and faster. It’s definitely been a fun process getting recruited by them.”

The 5-foot-11, 215-pound Washington rushed for 2,233 yards and 27 touchdowns as a junior. He told Syracuse.com that he plans to enroll early at Syracuse next January.
