John Calipari looking for answers to Kentucky’s point guard woes after loss at Notre Dame

Kentucky has never scored fewer points in coach John Calipari's tenure than it did in a 64-50 loss at Notre Dame on Thursday night and look no further than point guard play for an explanation of the Wildcats' struggles.

Six games into the season, Calipari is still waiting for one of three players to take control of the point guard role and until one of them does claim the role, there could be more nights like this against other good teams.

It's a problem Calipari hasn't had to deal with much in recent years. He's been spoiled by players such as John Wall, Brandon Knight and Marquis Teague serving as the catalysts to the Wildcat offense.

Ryan Harrow finally scored his first points in a Kentucky uniform, but the North Carolina State transfer only played nine minutes and finished 1 for 4. Harrow had been expected to claim the point guard job after practicing in the program and learning Calipari's expectations all of last season.

Freshman Archie Goodwin has done his best this season playing out of position at the point, but he reverted to playing more like a shooting guard against the Irish leading to some ugly possessions and making it easy for Notre Dame on the defensive end. He did manage five assists.

Jarrod Polson is a scrapper, but he is adjusting to a significant increase in playing time this season over his first two years and finally being needed again.

Point guard issues haven't shown up in other games quite so dramatically when the Wildcats can simply overpower opponents with talent and depth. They had scored more than 100 in two of their previous three games before losing to the Irish.

The best thing for this situation is hoping that Harrow can start to earn more playing time and that he stays healthy the rest of the season after missing time in the early going this season with an illness and a personal matter.
