Dunk of the year nominee: Jarell Martin goes through-the-legs

Not many players are capable of pulling off the through-the-legs dunk LSU's Jarell Martin unleashed on Saturday against Florida.

Even fewer would be daring enough to attempt it with the score tied early in an important game. Martin poked away a lazy pass by the Gators late in the first half, corralled the loose ball and found himself alone in the open floor.

It was then that the sophomore forward decided to go through-the-legs, a risky choice that couldn't have thrilled his coach considering LSU (19-8, 8-6) is on the NCAA tournament bubble and can't afford to let anymore winnable games slip away.

Credit Martin for converting a dunk that will surely land him on SportsCenter — and for tallying 28 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Tigers to an important 70-63 victory — but I must admit I don't think the risk Martin took was worthwhile under the circumstances.

For LSU to shed its label as an underachiever, it needs its stars to put the team first and that sometimes means making the smart, safe play instead of the daring one guaranteed to land on YouTube.
