Backboard-shattering dunk forces postponement of Division II game

The downside to shattering a backboard on a dunk is typically that the player who does it ends up being showered in plexiglass shards.

Somehow, Colorado School of Mines center Trevor Wages managed to deftly avoid that.

When the 6-foot-9 junior shattered the glass on a two-handed dunk with six minutes left in the first half of a Division II game at Metro State on Friday night, he did it at such an angle that the broken bits all seemed to miss him. Wages told 9news.com he didn't even know the backboard had cracked until he looked behind him after the dunk.

"All of a sudden, I look back and it’s hanging down," Wages told the station. "I just started screaming.

"I was thinking, ‘Are we going to be able to play the rest of the game?’ We had the momentum, I guess you could say. Those kinds of plays get you pumped. You don’t want to stop playing."

Alas, Wages and his teammates did have to stop playing because Metro State didn't have an auxiliary backboard ready to be installed. The game will be resumed Sunday night at 7 p.m with Metro State leading 21-16.
