Advance Look at Louisville: An opposing coach breaks down the Cardinals
In the "Advance Look" series, Yahoo Sports will speak to coaches who have faced some of the nation's top teams in preseason exhibition games and share their post-game thoughts and a scouting report. Up first: Kentucky Wesleyan coach Happy Osborne on Louisville.
Kentucky Wesleyan coach Happy Osborne needed only four words to sum up his thoughts on his team's 115-67 loss to defending national champion Louisville in an exhibition game on Tuesday night.
"I'm glad it's over," Osborne said.
It's hard to blame Osborne after Louisville shot 57.1 percent from the floor, scored 66 second-half points and piled up 57 free throw attempts. Five Cardinals tallied 13 or more points including sophomore forward Montrezl Harrell (20) and guards Terry Rozier (18), Russ Smith (17) and Chris Jones (16).
Below is Osborne's evaluation of Louisville. He offers his thoughts on where Montrezl Harrell has improved, what should be expected of newcomers Rozier and Jones and how much Louisville will miss graduated seniors Peyton Siva and Gorgui Dieng.
Kentucky Wesleyan coach Happy Osborne:
1. "I think Louisville is really good. They didn't have Luke Hancock, Chane Behanan or Kevin Ware last night, and they'll end up playing all three of those guys. I think they're one of the best teams in the nation again this season. They're as good in the backcourt as I can imagine anyone in the country. Inside, when they get Behanan back, him and Montrezl Harrell are really good. [Stephan] Van Treese is also going to give them quality minutes. That gives them a good interior, and they can slide Wayne Blackshear down there if they want also."
2. Harrell is much improved. His intensity, his strength and I know that he didn't make free throws last night, but he has improved his 12 to 15 footer. His post moves are strong and when his shot goes up, he wants to go get it.
3. "They're going to miss Gorgui [Dieng] because he's a guy that can clean up your mistakes with his ability to protect the rim. They were OK there, not great. ... When they have everybody, the only thing you're going to question is if there's that 6-10, 6-11 guy to clean up the mistakes. But I still like their team. Van Treese knows what he's doing. He's played in two straight Final Fours, so this is not his first rodeo. He's going to be solid for them."
4. I watched Chris Jones play several times in junior college when I was an assistant at Tennessee Tech. I thought he was the best junior college guard in the country as a freshman. He's ultra-competitive, he's tough, he's strong and he's lightning-quick. If anything, sometimes he is too competitive, but you'd rather have to call him off than call him on. I just think he's going to be a really good player in that league and in the country.
5. They didn't shoot particularly well from the perimeter against us, but having Hancock back will help. I also really liked what I saw from [Terry Rozier]. He can play all three positions in the backcourt and he has speed, athleticism and basketball savvy.
