Colorado guards combine for 50 in handing Oregon its first loss
Colorado guards Spencer Dinwiddie and Askia Booker have played a lot of basketball together in 21/2 seasons and they've helped coach Tad Boyle turn Boulder into one of the hardest places in the nation to get a road win.
Previously unbeaten and 10th-ranked Oregon became their latest victim Sunday as the junior backcourt mates combined to score 50 points in the 20th-ranked Buffs' 100-91 Pac-12 Conference victory.
Playing a leading role in an upset over a higher ranked opponent is nothing new for Dinwiddie and Booker. They both played well in a December win over Kansas, in which Booker won the game on a 30-foot buzzer beater.
It might have been Booker's most complete all-around game in his CU career. In the past, Boyle has had to beg Booker to rebound and play better defense. Neither was a problem Sunday. Booker scored a season-best 27 points and grabbed seven rebounds. He also made a steal helping double team the post.
Dinwiddie scored 23 points and dished seven assists, which is pretty much what he's done all season.
Oregon won't get another crack at the Buffs until the conference tournament because of the Pac-12 scheduling formula that does not feature a full round-robin home-and-home system.
No one figured the Ducks would get through the regular season unscathed, especially not a in conference as deep as the Pac-12 with five or six teams likely to get into the NCAA tournament in March.
Oregon is still extremely dangerous and capable of winning the Pac-12 and a deep run into March. Most teams won't have the depth to match the Ducks, who are the highest scoring team in the nation. That was the case for the Buffs, but Colorado's starters managed to score 84 of its 100 points.
