Utah Jazz coach Sidney Lowe arrested on income tax charges in North Carolina
Sidney Lowe played in 193 NBA games spread out over six years before becoming one of the younger NBA coaches in recent history at age 33 and coaching for 307 total contests as a head man. He’s also worked as an assistant coach for various NBA outlets, ran the point for several Continental Basketball Association teams back before Isiah Thomas ruined the league, and spent five seasons coaching North Carolina State from 2006-2011.
The current Utah Jazz assistant certainly knows how to sweat his way toward one paying gig after another, and that’s to be respected – this is a man who has been part of 12 professional basketball organizations, some of them twice. Allegedly, though, Lowe failed to file income tax returns for his final three years at NC State, and while back home in North Carolina over the All-Star weekend, Lowe was arrested after being charged with income tax evasion.
Lowe, who coached the Wolfpack from 2006-2011, is currently an assistant coach with the NBA's Utah Jazz. At the time of his departure from State, he was making $500,000 per year.
He maintains a home in Wake Forest.
The 53-year-old Lowe faces three misdemeanor counts of willful failure to file a North Caroline Individual Income Tax Return and was placed under a $10,000 unsecured bond. A court appearance was scheduled for March 19.
Kurt Helin, at Pro Basketball Talk, speculates that Lowe will be back with the team soon enough because the government doesn’t really want to add to its losses by keeping Sidney behind bars, as it just wants its returns. Lowe should return to the Jazz soon enough, and Amar at SLC Dunk looks ahead to Lowe’s upcoming court appearance and points out that Sidney probably won’t have to miss a game with the team due to a friendly Jazz schedule.
