Meet the British boxer that wants to fight Conor McGregor

With Holly Holm’s successful transition from boxing to mixed martial arts, it can be expected that more practitioners of the sweet science could eventually find their way into a cage.

One of those fighters interested in making the transition is former WBA super middleweight contender George Groves. Groves, who is known for his two outings against Carl Froch, revealed to Starsport during the launch of the UFC 2 video game that he’s a huge fan of the UFC. More importantly, he’d love to get a shot at Conor McGregor.

"If McGregor is going to come to float around my weight and wants to do a pay-per-view fight and he wants to swear at me and call me names then I'd love to have a crack [at him],” Groves said.

McGregor’s recent fight against Nate Diaz was at 170 pounds and Groves currently campaigns at 168 pounds in the super middleweight division.

Groves (22-3, 17 knockouts) believes that because McGregor enjoys to stand and bang, this fight could be right in his wheelhouse. "I think it'd make for a very interesting fight,” Groves said. “And as I say, with him being predominantly a striker that's a huge thing as well.”

Groves watched McGregor lose by second-round submission to Diaz and believed that the Irishman was “unfit” and that was the reason that he met his demise. And perhaps a shot at McGregor’s suggested lack of a ground game, Groves went so far as to suggest that he, too, could choke McGregor out.

"He ain't gonna try and take me down,” Groves said. “Unless he's tired and he wants to tap out."

The 27-year-old Brit may not be making the transition to MMA anytime soon, however. He’s currently scheduled to face David Brophy at The O2 Arena in London on April 9. But given how the UFC has continued to put on huge events, there’s a possibility that Groves would jump at the opportunity should it present itself.
