Why was Kermit the Frog at the Yankees game?

We've always known that Kermit is a frog about town, but that didn't lessen the surprise — or the amusement, really — that we got from seeing him behind the plate at Yankee Stadium on Friday afternoon. As Andy Martino joked on Twitter, Kermit is one of the few people amphibians who can afford that seat on opening day.

But why was he there? And who he did watch the Yankees' 5-0 triumph over Albert Pujols and the Los Angeles Angels with?

The answer came a few minutes later as wire photos revealed that the politician to Kermit's right — the one he's ignoring in Mike Ferrin's screencap above — was none other than Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Further research revealed that the pair was at the game to help promote "NYC Family Fun," an initiative designed to encourage family tourism in the Big Apple.

Of course, that gives rise to a couple of more questions. If they were promoting 'family fun' where were Kermit and Miss Piggy's children?

And more importantly, why would we have seen only tiny frogs and pigs— but not little frog-pigs — had they also been there? As my brother is fond of asking, do the normal laws of genetics not apply to Muppets?

Just more things to ponder at the end of a long week, I suppose ...
