Son of Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy charged with murdering girlfriend

Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy has nothing to do with the murder charges brought against his son Jared Remy in Massachusetts, and yet secondary consequences of the alleged crime already are affecting his job.

The elder Remy, a popular former player with the Red Sox in the 1970s and '80s, is taking a leave of absence from NESN, for whom he has worked since 1988. Dennis Eckersley, a studio analyst for NESN and another famous former Red Sox player, takes over as Don Orsillo's broadcast partner for the time being. That includes a series at Fenway against the Yankees this weekend and Boston's upcoming West Coast road trip, CBS reports.

A fixture at Fenway Park in other capacities ever since retiring as a player, Remy also owns a hot dog stand and has written several Bosox-themed children's books. But this chapter in Remy's personal life is a nightmare, and includes horrific details for the victim:

Jared Remy, 34, is said by a prosecutor in the Boston Globe to have "attacked Jennifer Martel, his girlfriend of seven years and the mother of their four-year-old daughter, in the kitchen of their home, in the living room and on a stairway before pinning her to the ground of the patio where he stabbed her over and over and over again."

At least one neighbor saw this happen and intervened by trying to pull Jared Remy off Martel, but was driven back and slashed at. And the most tragic part might be that police had Jared Remy in custody Wednesday — but released him on his own recognizance — after he was arrested for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon against Martel.

Jerry Remy has not commented yet, but NESN said this in a statement via the Boston Herald.
