Rockies version of the 'Rally Squirrel' runs circles around Phillies

The Rally Squirrel is back!

Well, maybe it's not THAT Rally Squirrel, but his Colorado cousin — call him Rocky J? — did the family legacy proud on Saturday night when he took over Coors Field during the third and fourth innings of the Rockies 3-1 victory over the Phillies.

Ah, yes, the Philadelphia Phillies. They just can’t escape those pesky four-legged creatures. If you recall, they were the St. Louis Cardinals opponents during the 2011 NLDS when the original Rally Squirrel made his debut at Busch Stadium. And, yes, they lost the series, blowing a two games to one lead by dropping Game 4 in St. Louis and Game 5 in Philadelphia.

It's no wonder none of the Phillies seemed excited to see him, even the ones who weren't on that Phillies team.

Papelbon wasn't actually quoted as saying that, but does anybody doubt that ran through his mind?

It appears the squirrel gained entry into the stadium through an opening in right field. His first few minutes were spent roaming that area, possibly chirping at right fielder Marlon Byrd, but he soon became more adventurous and made his way towards the infield, forcing multiple stoppages in play.

To the Phillies, maybe. The squirrel did his best to divide their attention during his brief stay.

Perhaps the Rockies should just go ahead and adopt him much the same way the Milwaukee Brewers have adopted Hank the Dog. Anytime would be a good time to replace Dinger, the purple dinosaur who parades around as Colorado's mascot and distracts opposing pitchers from his perch behind home plate. The squirrel had the final part down pat, creating havoc and causing his biggest distractions only when Philadelphia was on the field.

In fact, it's probably no coincidence that his final jaunt around the field occurred just moments before Justin Morneau’s two-run fourth inning homer. He already knows his role.

Whatever the case, the squirrel was definitely the star of the show on Saturday night. When the Coors Field grounds crew lured him through the center field gate, the disappointment was audible. He still had plenty of energy, and the fans still desired to see more, but that will have to wait for another day if he can find his way back again.
