Report: Starlin Castro accused of sexual assault
The Chicago Cubs' offseason was thrown a major curve on Friday morning with a report that shortstop Starlin Castro is wanted for questioning by the Chicago police.
WBBM in Chicago reports that a woman has accused the 21-year-old shortstop of sexual assault after an incident late last September. No charges have been filed and Castro has reportedly not been in Chicago since leaving for the Dominican Republic the night after the alleged assault.
Sources say she and a friend left the bar at 3 a.m. and went to the 21-year-old Castro's apartment on State Street nearby.
According to the police report, the alleged victim said she blacked out.
She told police she came to, and found the alleged offender — Castro, according to our sources — sexually assaulting her.
The heavily redacted police report offers little information.
Castro's attorneys have released a statement (via Hardball Talk) that says they "are confident these allegations are baseless."
The Cubs, meanwhile, released the following statement:
"We are aware that a police report was filed regarding an incident involving Starlin, but we have received limited information. While this is something we take very seriously, there is not enough information to make any further comment or take action at this time. We are hopeful when the facts are brought to light, Starlin will be cleared of any wrongdoing."
Considered the cornerstone of the Cubs' future, Castro hit .307 with 10 homers and 66 RBIs in 2011 and made his first All-Star team. More details as they emerge.
