The Pete Rose reinstatement circus has hit a new high. According to TMZ Sports, Rose spent Wednesday in Beverly Hills taking a lie-detector test as part of his ongoing attempt to win the favor of new MLB commissioner Rob Manfred.

How very "Maury" of you, Pete. The story, of course, comes from TMZ Sports:

Multiple sources tell us Rose went to Jack Trimarco & Associates in Beverly Hills on Wednesday to take the lie detector test ... and it's all connected to his efforts to be reinstated.

Trimarco's pretty famous in lie detector circles. He's worked on terrorism cases like Oklahoma City and the '93 World Trade Center bombing. He's also the guy who truth tested Jose Canseco about steroids in baseball.

This is like a scene out of a reality TV show. Or an idea from a sports talk radio caller stumping for The Hit King. "Just strap yourself into a lie-detector, Pete, that'll show 'em." The question is whether a passing grade would even impress Manfred, who doesn't exactly seem the type to be wooed by the theater of a lie-detector test.

When Manfred took office, Rose was quick to appeal his ban from MLB. A new commish brings new hope for Rose, but Manfred hasn't tipped his hand too much one way or another. He has said he'd review the Rose case. In the meantime, Rose was allowed to participate in this year's All-Star game in Cincinnati. However, new documents also surfaced in June, saying Rose bet on games as a player, something he'd strongly denied in the past.

If we had to guess, that seems like a good reason Rose would be volunteering to take a lie-detector test.
