Potomac Nationals giving away Jayson Werth bobblehead with realistic beard

Although Jayson Werth did not make his way up through the Washington Nationals minor league system and was at no point a member of the Potomac Nationals, Washington's Single-A affiliate in the Carolina League will be honoring the outfielder with a bobblehead giveaway on Saturday.

According to the team, the first 1,000 fans to arrive at Pfitzner Stadium will be going home with a very detailed miniature version of Werth, which includes an all too realistic beard.

That's a commitment to detail we don't often see with ballpark giveaways. Sure, we've seen bobbleheads (or bobblebeards, in this case) and gnomes and other such things that prominently feature a player's beard or hair, but rarely with an actual hair-like material serving as their hair. Potomac must have taken a trip to a nearby doll factory to find enough hair for not just one bobblehead, but 1,000 of them.

According to the DC Sports Blog, it's not just Werth's beard that's overflowing, his mane is bursting out from the back of his batting helmet halfway down his back. That's an exaggeration of Werth's current look, but really only a slight one. Before the season ends, it could be a spot-on likeness.

Again, all of that for a player who never played in Washington's minor league system. His minor league days were split between the Baltimore Orioles, who drafted him in 1997, and the Toronto Blue Jays, where he was traded in 2001 and eventually debuted in the big leagues in 2002. He also spent time with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies before signing a seven-year deal worth $126 million with Washington in 2010.

By the way, the Nationals also have an upcoming giveaway honoring Werth. On Aug. 5, a Jayson Werth garden gnome will be given away prior to their game against the New York Mets.

Again, the beard is a prominent feature, but it certainly pales in comparison to Potomac's version.

Credit where it's due, the minor league team has outdone the major league team on this one. Although both are certainly nice additions if you're into collecting such items.
