The Juice: Indians stun Tigers in 9th, Cardinals gain split in L.A.

Thrice-baked Potato: Working for the third straight day, Tigers closer Jose Valverde couldn't hold a slim lead against the lowly Indians, who scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to win 7-6 at the Progressive Jake. Jason Kipnis opened with a leadoff double and Carlos Santana tripled him home one out later, with Valverde blowing his fifth save in 36 chances. Sidebar: Nice, nice try, Don Kelly.
After two intentional walks, Lonnie Chisenhall lined a single over the drawn-in outfield for the winning moment. The comeback helped the White Sox gain a game on Detroit, which blew a lead provided by Miguel Cabrera's three-run homer in the seventh. The Tigers had a bad day all of the way around, losing catcher Alex Avila to an injured jaw after he collided with Prince Fielder on a pop up in the seventh. And manager Jim Leyland was ejected by umpires for arguing about something or other. The Tigers play a makeup at Chicago on Monday afternoon, the last scheduled game of the season between the AL Central titans.
What could have been: If only the previous guy still owned the Dodgers. That way, we could have a pun about Jon Jay of the Cardinals administering some "chief justice" in the "McCourt of law" by providing the deciding hit in a 5-2 victory in 12 innings. As it is, we can only be wistful and provide this video link of Jay's tie-breaking double. Good enough?
O's before A's: Baltimore avoided getting swept out of the East Bay with a 9-5 victory against the A's. Matt Wieters hit a pair of home runs and Endy Chavez had four hits to continue the parade of heroic spare parts for the Orioles, who closed within two games of Oakland in the massive wild-card scrum.
New York good, Tampa Bay bad: The Yankees beat the Rays 6-4 and stayed a game ahead of the Orioles in the AL East with 16 to play. The Rays ended their road trip with five losses in six games against the two teams ahead of them in the division. They are five games out of first and four behind Baltimore for the second wild-card spot. Across the state line in New Jersey, the New York football Giants beat the Buccaneers to complete a bi-sport sweep.

• The Phillies lost 7-6, dropping three of four games at Houston to fall four games behind the Cardinals in the wild-card race with 15 to play.
• Ryan Braun hit career homers 200 and 201, leading the Brewers to a 3-0 win against the Mets. He's just 28 years old. Milwaukee won for the 20th time in 26 games and is 2 1/2 out of the wild-card party.
• The Padres — the Padres?! — are six games back in the wild-card race after winning for the 19th time in 25 games, beating the Rockies 12-11.
