Jake Peavy on next start: 'I was just in the shower thinking about Dee Gordon'

It takes right-hander Jake Peavy very little time to start thinking about his next start, especially these days with the San Francisco Giants in the thick of a pennant race with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Peavy allowed a run, five hits and a walk over seven innings Tuesday night, leading the Giants to a 2-1 victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks. With the Dodgers losing at Colorado, the Giants closed to within three games of the NL West leaders. In a few short days, Peavy will make his next start at Dodger Stadium, where first place might be on the line.

And Peavy can't wait. He's not waiting, actually. He's already thinking about it.

“I won’t lie, I was just in the shower thinking about Dee Gordon,” Peavy said of the Dodgers leadoff batter.

Hey now! Talk about working up a lather, to quote Andrew Baggarly of CSN Bay Area. Wow, that's some progressive talk from a major league ballplayer.

“Isn’t that crazy? Isn’t that unbelievable? I was in the shower thinking, `How do I get Dee Gordon out?’ My head will be all L.A. all weekend. I’ll be ready for that start and I’ll do all I can do, I can promise you that.”

It does not surprise Peavy’s teammates that he could turn a bar of soap into a baseball, could wash off a tense, one-run victory by working himself back into a lather. After holding down the Diamondbacks into the eighth inning, he owns a 2.16 ERA in 10 assignments as a Giant, seven of those have been quality starts and in two others, he finished an out short of it.

And that includes the one outing where he waiting nearly three hours between pitches because of a rain delay, and wound up going six innings. Peavy is just a different animal.
