Curtis Granderson pledges money to build baseball stadium at alma mater

(AP)While the University of Miami, home of Alex Rodriguez Park, finds itself under investigation in the fall out from the Biogenesis scandal, one of Rodriguez's teammates is lending a hand to his alma mater's baseball program. A hand full of money, actually.

New York Yankees outfielder Curtis Granderson announced Wednesday that he would fund the construction of a new multi-million dollar baseball stadium at University of Illinois at Chicago, where he starred 2000-2002. The announcement came as Granderson, a Chicago native, had his jersey retired at the school's inaugural Diamond Dinner, according to The Hall of Very Good.

"I am in a position where I have the ability to help kids pursue whatever dreams they have, whether they are educational, athletic or just life in general," Granderson said. "I'm grateful that I have the opportunity to team up with UIC, which has helped me get to where I am today."

The new stadium -- which will take Granderson's name upon completion -- triples the capacity of UIC's current stadium. It will also will be a hub for youth baseball programs in the area, particularly aimed at inner-city kids. Check out the video below for a rendering of the stadium, which should open in 2014 or 2015.
