Brewers’ Bob Uecker plans to call fewer road games in 2014
The tweet from WTMJ's Greg Matzek says so right off: "No cause for alarm but, Bob Uecker will take a small step back" from Milwaukee Brewers games on the radio in 2014. He's going to keep doing home games at Miller Park and will pick and choose which road series he calls. He's not sick, he's just being prudent.
Still, Uecker cutting back is not easy news to hear, if you're a Brewers fan. Paul Molitor and Robin Yount might come and go to the Hall of Fame. Ryan Braun might get suspended for 65 games. Bernie Brewer might lose his beer stein. Uecker, meanwhile, has been the constant. But he also turned 79 years old this past Sunday, and has been the voice of the Brewers since 1971. He missed about three months of the season in 2010 because of aortic valve replacement surgery. Cutting back was going to happen sooner or later. It's time.
But, there's good news: Matzek later tweeted that Uecker will do more road games if the Brewers have a competitive team. If they're in a pennant race in August and September, Uecker says, he wants to be there, too. It's a "fluid" situation.
Here's the entirely of an interview Uecker did Thursday morning with WTMJ that explains where he's coming from. He also jokes about how he's having trouble getting the fields at spring training in Maryvale, Ariz. ready, so you know Uecker's feeling OK:
He said he would focus on trips where he could see many of his friends who he's made in his decades in baseball.
"Until I have problems getting around...and I don't have any problems, I'm going to stick around (broadcasting) and enjoy it."
That's what what so many of us want to hear.
