'Field of Dreams' cast will have a Father's Day reunion for film's 25th anniversary
Monday is the 25th anniversary of "Field of Dreams," a film that anybody reading a baseball blog surely knows well. But the big celebration of "Field of Dreams" turning 25 is yet to come.
Details were announced Monday for a Father's Day weekend (June 13-15) cast reunion and celebration of the film that will include star Kevin Costner and other cast members, as well as baseball players Bret Saberhagen, Glendon Rusch and Ryan Dempster. Bob Costas will emcee and Matt Lauer of NBC's "Today" show, who will lead a Q & A with the film's cast. This will, of course, take place in Dyersville, Iowa, where "Field of Dreams" was filmed.
Father's Day is the perfect time to honor the film, which is about parents and children as much as it's baseball. That in mind, the event will carve out a time for fathers and sons to "have a catch." Also on the schedule: Kevin Costner's band performing in nearby Dubuque, a baseball tournament where actors and celebrities will serve as managers and a brunch on Father's Day itself. Kevin Costner recorded a video message (above) that was played at the Monday press conference announcing the 25th anniversary festivities. He said:
"I am looking forward to returning to Dyersville to celebrate the 25th anniversary of 'Field of Dreams.' I've come to know how much this film means to people from all over America and particularly know how important it has become to Iowans. 'Field of Dreams' is special to all of us that were lucky enough to be in it, too. It transcends more than just baseball. It is about believing in the unbelievable. It's about relationships. It's about fathers and sons and the things that go unsaid for too long."
The Des Moines Register offers more details on the anniversary event:
Actor Timothy Busfield (who played Costner's brother-in-law) and Dwier Brown (who played his ghostly father) also will appear. More cast members will be announced soon, according to Go the Distance Baseball LLC, the group that has been working to redevelop the farm around the Field of Dreams into a youth sports tournament complex called All-Star Ballpark Heaven.
The movie will be shown June 13 on center field, and families are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets for the screening. Access to the screening and the rest of the weekend will be free for spectators, but sponsorships with VIP access also are being sold.
Any diehard "Field of Dreams" fans who want to make a pilgrimage to the site in the Iowa that served as Ray Kinsella's farm turned baseball field, can do so before or after the Father's Day event. The site is open daily to visitors and admission is free.
There's been a plan in place for a few years to turn the area surrounding the baseball field into All-Star Ballpark Heaven, a $74 million baseball/softball complex for traveling teams. The plan has sparked debate locally. The latest developments, according to the Des Moines Register, point toward Ballpark Heaven opening in 2015.
