World Junior 2015: Max Domi’s 3-point night leads Canada to gold; Day 10’s 3 Stars
Buzzing The Net's Three Stars from Day 10 of the World Junior Hockey Championship on Monday:
No. 1 Star: Max Domi, Canada
Domi came up big in the gold medal game in his father's old barn. He led Canada's offense with a goal and two assists in the 5-4 win over Russia in Toronto.
The Arizona Coyotes prospect helped get the ball rolling for Canada just 23 seconds into it by setting up Anthony Duclair for a goal in the slot. He netted his fifth of the tourney seven minutes into the second period when he wired a wrist shot past Ilya Sorokin to give Canada a 3-0 lead. He notched his second helper just two minutes and 30 seconds later when Sam Reinhart tipped his shot from the point.
Zachary Fucale deserves props for his third period performance. The Montreal Canadiens pick turned aside all 11 shots that came his way in the final 20 minutes following letting five of 19 sneak by him in the first two periods.
No. 2 Star: Martin Reway, Slovakia
The Canadiens prospect stepped up to help Slovakia win its first medal at the tourney in 16 years. He was in on three goals with three assists in the 4-2 bronze medal victory against Sweden.
Reway notched his first point when he set up a Mislav Rosandic goal with a nice cross-ice pass to give his club a quick 2-0 lead just 3:22 into the match. He went on to assist Pavol Skalicky’s game-winner on a power play before driving the puck down the ice to set up Patrik Koys’ empty-netter to seal the win.
Reway’s showing edged Denis Godla’s 26-save performance, but Slovakia wouldn’t have even been in the bronze medal game if it wasn’t for their star netminder. The tournament MVP stood on his head in the crease to give his team a chance to win nearly all of their games. He finished the tourney with a .926 save percentage and 2.76 average despite letting in five goals against Canada in the first game of the tourney.
No. 3 Star: Nikolia Glodobin, Russia
With Russia down 5-2, Glodobin made two key plays to bring his country within one. The San Jose Sharks first-rounder drove the puck down the ice with just over five minutes left in the second period and set up Carolina Hurricanes pick Sergie Tolchinski for a one-timer. Less than three minutes later, Tolchinski returned the favour by setting him up for a goal while he was sitting in front of the net.
Honourable mention: William Nylander, Sweden
Nylander scored a crucial goal for Sweden in the first period to get them back into the game after they gave up two quick goals. He caught a pass from Axel Holmstrom in the slot and fired it into the back of the net with a wrister. This marker led to Sweden finishing the period with a 15-10 shot advantage following being down 7-1 in shots early in the contest.
The Toronto Maple Leafs first-round pick had an outstanding tourney for Sweden. He led his team in points with three goals and seven helpers in seven games.
