Val-d’Or Foreurs, via London scoreboard operator, get Memorial Cup bulletin board material

LONDON, Ont. — It is one thing for the scoreboard operators testing their equipment to post a fake score, such as 99-88, while one of the teams is holding its pregame skate.

But 5-1? Unwittingly provided bulletin board material or foreshadowing?

On Friday morning at the Memorial Cup, while the Val-d'Or Foreurs held their pregame skate before the MasterCard Memorial Cup tournament opener against the London Knights. For several minutes during the light workout, the Budweiser Gardens displayed "Knights 5-Foreurs 1" score. After one period of the imaginary game.

That alone isn't proof there was any intent to taunt Val-d'Or. It is a faux pas, though, since it could have come off as taunting the Foreurs by telling them they were going to be blown out of the water in the opening 20 minutes against the host Knights. Call it a breach of protocol.

As a prediction on the first period, the fake score was half right. Anthony Mantha got one goal for the Foreurs. The Knights were unable to get on the board, with Val-d'Or goalie Antoine Bibeau coming up with 20 saves in the period.
