OHL’s Guelph Storm donning Hamilton Tiger-Cats charity jersey on Grey Cup Sunday

For a change, here's a good story about people in Southern Ontario repping the CFL. The Grey Cup likely matters more in Saskatchewan than in southern Ontario, but one would not know it from the junior hockey tribute jerseys recognizing the competitors in the big game.

Last month, the Western Hockey League's Regina Pats held a Rider Pride Night in anticipation of the Grey Cup being played in the city. With the hometown Roughriders facing the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who were displaced to Guelph's Alumni Stadium this season, the OHL's Guelph Storm are matching the Pats' ante.

On Grey Cup Sunday, the Storm will wear Ticats-inspired togs, for a worthy cause.

If the Guelph Giants seem familiar, it might be due to an uplifting video that circulated widely in mid-2012.

Both jerseys could be sloughed off as a promotion intended to latch on to the popularity of a successful CFL team. It's noteworthy that the Pats kept their insignia above that of the Riders', as if to express a wish that the popularity pecking order in their city could be reversed. For instance, the Swift Current Broncos also held a Rider Pride night in 2012, but the Riders logo was all by its lonesome.

Anyway, just an observation; at least it's good to be talking about someone other in Southern Ontario other than Rob Ford wearing a CFL jersey. (The Toronto Argonauts were outscored 19-0 by the Ticats during the Eastern Division final after the Toronto mayor showed up at Rogers Centre wearing double blue.)

For uni aesthetics, it is definitely unique that Guelph fully embraced the traditional gridiron look, with large player numerals on the chest instead of a crest. The proof of whether it brings the Ticats any luck will be known by around 9 p.m. ET on Sunday.
