If there's any justice in this life, the amazing save Jake Smith made on Vancouver Canucks prospect Cole Cassels during the OHL playoffs will get as much circulation as his shootout gaffe.

Back in October, the North Bay Battalion netminder celebrated an apparent victory-clinching save, oblivious that the puck had landed on the ice and rolled into the net for a goal that extended the game. (That clip has been viewed 950,000 times.) Tuesday, Smith offered a much more positive reminder about taking nothing for granted in hockey until it's official by making a gotta-see-it-to-believe-it glove save during the Battalion's 2-1 overtime win over Cassels and the Oshawa Generals in the Eastern Conference final.

The Generals seemed to have a sure go-ahead goal in the second after breaking away 3-on-1. New York Islanders prospect Michael Dal Colle induced both the last man back and backchecking Nick Paul to slide futilely out of the play. That created on a two-on-none in front of the net as the puck went from Dal Colle to Stephen Desrochers to Cassels, but Smith performed absolute grand goal larceny.

That is a Gord Miller 'can you believe it?' moment. It was a microcosm of the money goaltending that Smith, who is pacing the OHL with a 1.78 average and .938 save percentage in the playoffs, is furnishing for the Battalion. While he's not prototype NHL size, standing just 5-foot-11, the undrafted Smith has absolutely bedevilled the Generals.

"Why people don't give him a chance at the next level is beyond me," Battalion coach Stan Butler said during a post-game news conference. "He's a great athlete, he's a competitor and all he does is stop pucks and wins. And, God forbid, I'm sure there's a few teams in the National Hockey League that could use goalies like that."

That save, among others, helped North Bay get to overtime, where it won on a goal by New Jersey Devils signing Ryan Kujawinski to go up 2-1 in the series.

Smith was not the only goalie in the OHL to drop some jaws on Tuesday. During the third period of the Sault Ste. Marie-Erie contest, New York Rangers second-rounder Brandon Halverson made a highlight-reel glove save on Nick Betz during a tie game in the third period. Unfortunately for Halverson and his Greyhounds, it didn't prevent them from losing 7-5 and falling behind 3-1 in the best-of-7 series.

Which stop is better, Halverson's or Smith's? The former came on a chance created by the most dangerous man in junior hockey, Connor McDavid. The latter came on a play where Smith appeared to be dead to rights. It also came in a game with no margin for error, where there were only three goals scored in 70-plus minutes. Based on that, Smith might get the nod.
