Neil Doef's mother says thanks in heartwarming Facebook message

Doef, 17, plans to enrol at Princeton in 2016-17

It is a mother’s heartwarming letter penned one year to the day after a horrific hockey incident left her son’s life forever changed.

The Facebook message posted over the weekend by Bobbi-Jean Doef has no shortage of “thank-yous” throughout it, a poignant, powerful post that acknowledges numerous people, both inside and outside of the hockey world, who have either stepped up to help or reached out to Neil Doef.

Confined to a wheelchair after being hit into the boards at the 2014 World Under 17 Hockey Championship in Kindersley, Sask., the former standout with the Smiths Falls Bears of the Tier II Central Canada Hockey League and a Princeton University hockey recruit continues to receive an outpouring of encouragement and support.

It’s something Bobbi-Jean recognizes throughout her letter featured on the family’s DoefStrong page.

“There is absolutely no doubt in our minds, that we would not have survived without the support from all of you! We have all made it through year one, and Neil has defied many odds, but the reality is, as anyone who has suffered a spinal cord injury knows...some of his challenges will be life long, and he will definitely have to continue this journey with ongoing strength, determination and a positive attitude.”

Neil, a popular teenager before the injury who carried the Pan Am Games torch through Smith Falls in July, has remained upbeat despite the life-altering situation. He has been a source of inspiration to his family and countless others, as his mother wrote.

“NEIL DOEF...you are our Hero! We are so very proud of you, each and every day. You have never complained about this unfair hand you were dealt, but instead have faced every moment of adversity head on. You continue to amaze us with your strength, determination and positive attitude. We will continue to be by your side every step of the way, and know that you are destined to do great things, no matter what you choose. We love you!”

That sentiment is also reserved for the many people, organizations and others who have helped along the way. And who Bobbi-Jean thanks in her Facebook message.

“This was definitely the most difficult "Thank You" I have ever written. I am concerned, and certain, that I have missed someone, and truly hope that I haven't. UNFORTUNATELY, it would be next to impossible for me to list you all! So, to EVERY single person that has supported us this past year, we THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts.”
