Moroz plays hero for the Oil Kings, also #FreeJaedon: Saturday’s 3 stars
No. 1 star: Michell Moroz, Edmonton Oil Kings (WHL)
Quite a few players had multiple point nights in the CHL Saturday, but none were more important than Moroz’s effort against the Swift Current Broncos.
Moroz’s two goals, including the winner, in Edmonton’s 4-2 win over Swift Current. The win puts the Oil Kings within three points of the Broncos for second place in the conference, and four points from division- and conference-leading Medicine Hat.
Moroz put the Oil Kings up 2-0 near the end of the first with his 14th of the season, then snapping a 2-2 tie in the third on the man-advantage for his 15th goal. He then added an assist to Curtis Lazar’s 15th of the year to ice it for the Oil Kings.
Tristan Jarry stopped 22 shots in the win, which improved Edmonton’s record to 14-8-0-1. Blueliner Ashton Sautner added two assists in the win. Eetu Laurikainen took the loss, stopping 34 shots, which dropped the Broncos to 15-9-0-2.
No. 2 star: Jaedon Descheneau, Kootenay Ice (WHL)
Descheneau had another strong night on Saturday with four points in Kootenay’s 6-1 win over Saskatoon. His night moved him to a tie for seventh place in WHL scoring with 33 points. #FreeJaedon.
Descheneau scored his 17th and 18th goals of the year and added two helpers to improve Kootenay’s record to 12-10-2-0. Captain Sam Reinhart added a goal and two assists, while defenceman Jagger Dirk had three helpers in the win. Austin Vetterl and Tim Bozon each had two assists.
Wyatt Hoflin stopped 26 shots for the victory, while Troy Trombley turned aside 36 shots in the loss.

No. 3 star: Nikolaj Ehlers, Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL)
Ehlers continued his hot rookie season with a three point night in Halifax’s 6-3 win over Acadie-Bathurst. Ehlers’ night gives him 35 points on the year, enough to put a seven points cushion on the rookie scoring lead.
The Mooseheads took a 3-0 into the first intermission with two goals from Brent Andrews and a goal and an assist from Ehlers. He added a goal on the powerplay in the second and was named first star. Jonathan Drouin had a goal and three assists and Darcy Ashley added a goal and two assists. Mac Weegar added two assists.
Kevin Darveau got the win in a rare start over Zach Fucale, stopping 29 shots and improving Halifax’s record to 19-8-0-0. The win put the Mooseheads within two points of the CHL-leading Armada (more on that later).
Honourable mention: Nikita Jevpalovs, Blainville-Boisbriand Armada (QMJHL)
Jevpalovs allowed the Armada to keep pace with the Mooseheads in a 6-3 win over Shawinigan. He had four assists to pace the offense for the CHL’s no. 1 team.
Jevpalovs had assists on the Armada’s first three goals in the win, which improved Blainville-Boisbriand’s record to 19-3-2-0. Samuel Montembault got the win, stopping 29 shots, in his fifth career start. Christopher Clapperton and Marcus Hinds each scored twice in the win. Marvin Cüpper took the loss in what is looking like another trying year for the Cataractes as they drop to 3-19-2-0.
Honourable mention: Scott Laughton, Oshawa Generals (OHL)
Laughton scored twice, a shorthanded effort followed with an unassisted one, in Oshawa’s 4-2 win over Owen Sound. The Generals captain now has 17 goals in 19 games, and nearing a 2-points-a-game pace with 35. Oshawa is tied for the OHL lead with 37 points in the win. Daniel Atlshuller stopped 36 shots in the win, where Owen Sound led in shots 38-28.
Oshawa improved to 18-4-0-1 with the victory, while Owen Sound dropped to 10-10-1-3 in the loss. Brandon Hope steered aside 24 shots, while blueliner Brayden Rose had a goal and an assist.
Honourable mention: Martin Reway, Gatineau Olympiques (QMJHL)
Reway was the best of a great group of Olympique performances in their 8-4 home win over Saint John at the Bob. Reway had two goals and three assists in the win, which improved their record to 18-8-0-0. Simon Tardif-Richard (2G, 2A) and Marc-Olivier Brouillard (2G, 1A) each scored twice for Gatineau, while Alexandre Carrier added three assists.
Saint John has now lost six in a row. Antoine Landry took the loss, taking all eight goals, while Robert Steeves earned the win by not falling asleep.
Potent notables: Alexandre Bélanger earned a 27-save shutout in Rouyn-Noranda’s 3-0 win in Sherbrooke. Julien Nantel had two assists. … Chase Witala scored twice in Prince George’s 3-1 road win over Everett. Troy Bourke scored the winner in a game where the ’Tips outshot the Cougars 35-17. … Matthew Boudens had three assists in Drummondville’s 5-4 overtime loss to Cape Breton. Julien Pelletier scored the winner for the Screaming Eagles while adding two assists. … Slater Koekkoek scored the game tying goal and assisted on the winner in Windsor’s come-from-behind 5-4 road win over Peterborough. Brody Vail had a goal and two assists. … Brandon Leipsic and Chase De Leo each scored twice in Portland’s 7-3 win over Kamloops. Chase Souto had two goals in the loss. … Erik Bradford scored twice and Andreas Athanasiou added three helpers in Barrie’s 8-2 dismantling of Niagara. Seven Colts had two points or more. … Captain Madison Bowey scored twice as Kelowna edged Medicine Hat 4-3. Mitchell Wheaton added two assists, and Jordon Cooke stopped 33-of-36. Hunter Shinkaruk had two assists in the loss. … Max Domi had two goals and an assist and Michael McCarron scored two goals, his first goals since his OHL debut, in London’s 6-3 win in Belleville. McCarron had gone 18 games without a goal. … Callum Booth wins his fourth game of the year as Quebec hung on to beat Chicoutimi 3-2. He stopped 34 shots, including 20-of-22 in the third period. … Brodie Barrick stopped 35 shots in Sarnia’s 4-2 win over Plymouth. The Sting win their third straight in as many nights, after two wins in a row by Taylor Dupuis. … Eric Brassard turned aside 37 shots as Charlottetown stole two points in a 3-2 shootout win over Moncton. Daniel Sprong scored the only goal in the shootout to win it.
