No. 1 Star: Conor Garland, Moncton Wildcats (QMJHL)

Garland (1G-2A, +2) hit the 100-point plateau and added one more for good measure as the Wildcats defeated the Victoriaville Tigres 3-2. He has an 11-point lead on Blainville-Boisbriand Armada centre Danick Martel in the QMJHL’s scoring race.

The Scituate, MA., native connected with Ivan Barbashev (2G-1A, +3) in all three of Moncton’s goals. He set up the St. Louis Blues second-round pick in the latter half of the first period for the first goal of the game. After Samuel Blais put Victoriaville up in front with a pair of markers, he found Barbashev for a second time just 1:11 into the final frame. The Russian wing returned the favour roughly six minutes later by setting up Garland for the game-winning goal.

It seems safe to say that Garland, who turns 19 in March, won’t be passed over in the NHL draft for a second time this June. His incredible skill, which is made obvious in his 27 goals and 101 points in 56 contests on the year, should overshadow concerns about his smaller 5-foot-8, 168-pound frame, at least for a team hoping to snag a late-round steal.

With 77 points on the year, the Wildcats now sit tied with the Armada for top spot in the QMJHL standings.

No. 2 Star: Duncan Campbell, Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL)

The 18-year-old rookie (2G, +2) stole some of the spotlight away from Brandon’s offensive stars in a 5-2 victory over the Prince Albert Raiders.

Campbell showed up ready to play as he lit the lamp just 3:55 into the contest to give his squad a quick lead. He practically sealed the win for the Wheat Kings with his second goal. He found the back of the net on a two on one with less than three minutes left in the game to make it a 4-2 affair.

The Brandon, MB., native’s pair of markers likely lifted some weight off his shoulders as it ended a 10-game goal-less drought. He has 10 goals and 16 points in 54 matches on the year.

No. 3 Star: Tim Bozon, Kootenay Ice (WHL)

Albeit it was in a 5-4 losing effort, Bozon earned a star by scoring a hat trick against the Saskatoon Blades, which is coincidentally the team that he played his last game against before suffering from a near-fatal case of meningitis last year.

The Montreal Canadiens draft choice sniped a crucial goal late in the first period to put the Ice within two of the Blades. Following scoring a power-play marker roughly midway through the second, he forced the game into extra time by tying the match up at four with 54 seconds left in it.

Saskatoon overage Sam McKechnie (2G) netted the overtime winner just 24 seconds into the fourth period.

Honourable mentions: Laurent Dauphin and Julio Billa, Chicoutimi Sagueneens (QMJHL)

In a 6-0 win against the Drummondville Voltigeurs, Dauphin (1G-2A, +2) led the offense while Billa stood tall in net with a 26-save shutout.

Dauphin, an Arizona Coyotes second-round pick, notched his 25th goal on the year at the 8:13 mark in the opening frame to give Chicoutimi a 2-0 lead. He went on to help set up markers from Sebastien Gauthier (2G) and Jesse Lussier (1G-1A, +4) in the latter half of the game.

Billa’s busiest 20 minutes of action came right off the hop as he turned aside 12 pucks in the first period. He faced seven shots in each of the remaining frames.

Potent notables: Anthony Richard (1G-3A, +4) led the Val’Dor Foreurs to an 8-7 win over the Sherbrooke Phoenix… Rimouski Oceanic’s Anthony DeLuca and Christopher Clapperton notched a pair of goals each in a 4-2 victory against the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies… Martel scored twice as the Aramada knocked off the Baie-Comeau Drakkar 4-1… Ottawa 67’s puck-stopper Liam Herbst posted a 16-save shutout in a 3-0 win over the Kingston Frontenacs…Victoria Royals defender Jack Walker (3G-1A, +3) completed his hat trick with an empty-net marker in a 6-3 victory against the Seattle Thunderbirds.
