MasterCard Memorial Cup: Kerby Rychel’s 2 goals spark Storm — Saturday’s 3 Stars

LONDON, Ont. — Yahoo! Junior Hockey's 3 Stars following the Guelph Storm's 5-2 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings on Day 2 of the MasterCard Memorial Cup:

No. 1 star: Kerby Rychel, Guelph Storm

Rychel scored the last two goals of the OHL final and scored the Storm's first two of the Memorial Cup, one by pluck and one by sheer luck. But both were critical to helping the Storm keep the game tight until its quick-strike capability kicked in late in the second period and early in the third, when Brock McGinn and Tyler Bertuzzi each scored decisive goals off the rush. The Columbus Blue Jackets first-rounder also battled along the walls all afternoon with national junior teammate Griffin Reinhart, helping create chances and offensive zone time for the OHL rep.

In the final minute of the first, Oil Kings defenceman Aaron Irving was penalized for roughing. Robby Fabbri was kicked out of the circle on the enusing faceoff, but Rychel stepped in and won the draw against Curtis Lazar. The puck didn't leave the Oil Kings zone until it was retrieved for the faceoff after Rychel scored with 4.2 seconds left. First he, Fabbri and Zack Mitchell freed the puck from Reinhart's possession in the corner and got it to the point, creating a shot and a juicy rebound that Rychel deposited behind Tristan Jarry.

Edmonton took a 2-1 lead with goals 27 seconds apart early in the second period. The Storm came right back with a semi-fluke power-play goal. With Jarry out of his crease, forward Mads Eller tried to clear the puck, only to have it hit an oncoming Rychel and ricochet into the Oil Kings net.

No. 1 star: Tyler Bertuzzi, Guelph Storm

'Little Bert,' as is his wont, was the progenitor of severe gluteal discomfort for Edmonton, pestering the Oil Kings physically and no doubt verbally. The Detroit Red Wings late second-rounder augmented his agitating by scoring the snipe of the day 5:46 into the third period to give the Storm a much needed two-goal cushion. Bertuzzi picked a perfect spot to race ahead for a lead pass from Nick Ebert, cut left to force Jarry to shift and then went high glove for the goal.

Bertuzzi, centre Pius Suter and overage Ryan Horvat gave Guelph an effective third line as the game unfolded, even though the trio didn't start the game together. They also connected on the final insurance goal with 4:11 remaining.

No. 3 star: Curtis Lazar, Edmonton Oil Kings

The Oil Kings got their only two goals 27 seconds apart in the second period. Not coincidentally, No. 27 was in one of them. The Ottawa Senators first-round pick made a superb read to thread a cross-ice pass that Ashton Sautner rapped in to give Edmonton a 2-1 lead.

Phoenix Coyotes first-rounder Henrik Samuelsson scored the other Oil Kings goal. For those scoring at home, six goals came from players with a blood relative in the NHL: three by sons (Rychel, Samuelsson), two by a nephew (Bertuzzi) and one by a brother (McGinn).
