Kemptville 73′s, Ottawa Jr. Senators miss 48 shootout attempts in a row (VIDEO)

You are about to witness the shootout to end all shootouts.

A 25-round shootout where the 49th shooter, Jonathan Cyr, Old Lucky Squared Seven, was the only man to convert seems like the argument for retiring the tiebreaker once and for good. For absurdity and redundancy, what can top what happened Sunday in the Central Canada Hockey League season regular-season finale between the last-place Kemptville 73's and first-place Ottawa Jr. Senators? But it was a reminder odd sports things will pop up when you least expect, and that's spirit of this post.

It's a record at several levels.

Kemptville and goalie Billy Cooper came in long resigned to playing for pride and Ottawa rested several regulars for the playoffs. Unnaturally, in a game that many may have just wanted to get over with, no one could end it. Ottawa's Thierry Gibeault scored with 3:27 left in the third period to give Ottawa a point it didn't need, five minutes of 4-on-4 did not resolve anything and then they went to the shootout. The intensity likely wasn't too high, which might help explain why the lone commentator keeps IDing Ottawa backup goalie Alexander Savard as "Millen" while starter Charlie Millen was on the bench.

Here's the entire 19½ minutes of odyssey, ordeal and outstanding goaltending by Cooper and Savard, both 19-year-old goalies. Cyr, the penultimate shooter, finally buried to give Kemptville the 4-3 win.

Kemptville's Juneau St. Germain, a call-up from midget hockey, hit the post in Round 8. He's only in Grade 10 and he's already a footnote to an organized hockey record. He's also too young to be party to this joke construction. They did some shots. And more shots. Like The Hangover 3, only it had there was a point to be found.

It's safe to say it's the longest shootout in any of the Canadian Junior Hockey League's member leagues. The OHL's London Knights and Mississauga Steelheads went 19 rounds in December during the Knights' 24-game win streak. London goalie Kevin Bailie, who's now in Junior A with the Summerside (P.E.I.) Western Capitals, stopped 16-of-19 shots whereas Mississauga's Spencer Martin made 15 shootout saves.

The fact neither team could score is just bizarre.

It was just Kemptville's 15th win in 62 games. It's not one they or the 131 fans in the crowd will forget.
