Jake DeBrusk double helps Swift Current snap Regina Pats’ streak: Wednesday’s 3 Stars

No. 1 star: Jake DeBrusk, Swift Current Broncos (WHL)

Swift Current rebuffed the streaking Regina Pats with a 6-2 win, fanning their flickering hopes of winning the Eastern Division. DeBrusk, the son of a former NHL tough guy Louie DeBrusk, copped first-star honours after notching his first Western League two-goal game.

The Broncos, who are sixth in the Eastern Conference, went up 3-0 in the first with Calgary Flames prospect Coda Gordon (1G-2A, +1) factoring in two early goals. Late in the second, the 17-year-old DeBrusk deflected Dillon Heatherington's shot into the net to deflate whatever hope Regina had of a comeback. The rookie, who's had five multi-point nights this season even though he's a dues-paying rookie not normally featured on a scoring line, scored again in the third to complete his milestone night.

No. 2 star: Mason McDonald, Charlottetown Islanders (QMJHL)

McDonald, who's vying to be drafted in June, made a career-high 52 saves during the Islanders' heartbreaking 3-2 overtime loss to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. The 6-foot-3 southpaw stopped 18-of-20 shots during the second period, when the Eagles' Cam Darcy scored twice but his team probably should have had more to show the effort. McDonald, a Halifax native who's had to stop more than 40 shots in three of his five starts this month, was also outstanding in the third as he helped Charlottetown cadge a regulation tie. Russian import Maxim Lazarev won it for the Eagles with 57 seconds left in OT.

No. 3 star: Matt Murray, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL)

Barring a matchup in the league final, the 'Hounds will have the last laugh over interconference rival Sudbury Wolves after winning 2-1 in a shootout to take the season series 4-1-0-1 (with that one shootout win). The 19-year-old Murray, in coach Sheldon Keefe's phrasing, "made a lot of saves look easy" while helping the 'Hounds withstand the Wolves. The Thunder Bay native actually just made a lot of saves, period, kicking away 45-of-46 during the game and nixing two shootout tries while Jared McCann and Charley Graaskamp converted.

Murray is third in the OHL in average (2.51) and save percentage (.922).

Honourable mention: Curtis Valk, Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL)

The visiting Tigers were able to finish what they started on Tuesday with the Edmonton Oil Kings by winning 4-3 in overtime to split a home-and-home series. Valk (2G, +1), the Tigers' overage captain, scored his 37th of the season with 13:24 left to force overtime. Blake Penner, who was named first star inside Rexall Place, then scored in OT. The result helped the Tigers, who led Edmonton for much of the night on Tuesday, tighten their grip on fourth place in the Eastern Conference. Medicine Hat holds a five-point lead over Kootenay.
